28 SEP 19 – PEWSEY VALE V WESTBURY MATCH REPORT

Pewsey Vale RFC 18 – 28 Westbury RFC

PEWSEY WRAPPED UP BY WESTBURY

A competitive match played end to end with Westbury sealing the game in the last 15 minutes with 2 well taken tries; Vale’s 16 man squad not having the fresh legs available to the visitors, who were in the enviable position of having a full bench of replacements.

Westbury were first on the scoreboard after 5 minutes when their fly-half slotted a penalty, Pewsey being penalised for holding on. 2 minutes later Vale’s fly-half Tom Regan responded with a penalty goal, Westbury being caught offside.

By the end of the first quarter Westbury added a penalty goal from a high tackle, and a converted try having pounced on a loose pass, as Pewsey were attempting to breakout from their own 22.

Pewsey then held field position. As the clock hit the half hour, from a driven forward line out, scrum half Henri Balls charged for the line, Regan adding the extras.

2 minutes later a Regan penalty goal with the score tied at 13 – 13. Just before the half time whistle Westbury hit back with a penalty goal of their own.

Half Time: Pewsey Vale 13 – 16 Westbury

The third quarter was played out in in midfield with each side attacking with vigour and defences holding firm.  With 15 minutes to go, Pewsey lost a vital lineout 10 metres from their line, allowing Westbury to score a converted try. The visitors’ third try came 5 minutes later, unconverted.

Digging deep Pewsey produced some go forward, lock Mike Paddick hitting the whitewash after a bullocking run through the visitors’ defence. With the clock running down Regan’s quick attempt at goal drifting wide.

Pewsey ended the day on the front foot, but ran out of time as they chased a losing bonus point.
