calne 62-14 pewsey vale (15/10/22)

Due to a mounting injury list Pewsey were only able to travel to Calne with a squad of 17 for what was always going to be a tough away fixture.

Pewsey started slowly and Calne utilised their large forward pack to good effect, narrowing the Pewsey defence to create space out wide fpr the opening score. The conversion was unsuccessful, 5-0. The home team continued to pile on the pressure and were able to cross the try line 3 more times in the opening 12 minutes of the contest leaving the score at 24-0. The lads then rallied and began to show some fight in defence holding the game in the midfield for the next 25 minutes of the half. However, a line break from Calne saw the Vale defence breached again to make the score 29-0.

Pewsey struck back quickly with a score of their own. Some strong carries by Prop Phil Hobbs and Centre Josh Terrar created space for Rob Boyd-Wallis to go over for his first of the afternoon. The extras were added by Fly Half Sam Flippance to make the score 29-7 at the break.

Unfortunately the second half started much the same as the first with Calne going over from the opening kick off as their winger claimed the ball and from the subsequent possession Calne got their first try of the second half, unconverted 34-7. Again this seemed to wake up the Vale defence who managed to keep Calne at bay for a decent spell. As the lads began to tire the floodgates did open slightly and Calne managed to score another 4 converted tries, meaning the score was 62-7 with 5 minutes remaining.

Showing some true Pewsey Vale fighting spirit one more try was added when another line break from Terrar saw Boyd-Wallis put in under the posts for his second of the afternoon. Again converted by S.Flippance making the final score 62-14.

A tough afternoon for a depleted Vale squad but we go again next week away at Swindon II’s.
