Chippenham ii 79-0 pewsey vale (01/10/22)

Pewsey’s first away trip of the season saw them travel to Chippenham II.

Following Chippenham’s strong season last year this was sure to be a tough fixture for The Vale. It proved to be so from the first kick off, with Pewsey failing to gather the high ball. Chippenham scored under the posts following some strong carries by their forwards, extras added, to make the score 7-0 with less than a minute on the clock. Chippenham quickly made the score 14-0 with more hard running in the pack to crash over for another score. Sadly, Pewsey then lost Flanker Rich Lucas to an ankle injury making matters worse. Pewsey had to defend constantly in the opening exchanges with some brilliant last-ditch tackles going from Fullback Will Bowerman, stopping numerous line breaks through a porous Vale defensive line. Following a lineout move Chippenham were able to score in the corner, with the conversion being missed the score was now 19-0 to the home side.

Chippenham were able to add another converted try, 26-0, before Pewsey lost another player to injury seeing Calum Marshall going off with a bloodied nose. Fast and well-structured rugby saw Chippenham continually make line breaks and put pressure on Pewsey defensively. Resulting in the home team scoring 3 more converted tries before half time, making the score 47-0 at the break.

The start of the second half showed no let up for Pewsey with Chippenham continuing to put together long periods of possession and carrying the ball hard through their forward pack. Some strong scrummaging and solid defensive work, from replacement Jim Vallis, saw Chippenham held up over the line. However, Chippenham were able to score shortly after, conversion missed, making the score 52-0.

Shortly after another unconverted try for Chippenham, Vale lost Flanker Olly Spence through injury piling on the misery for the visitors (57-0). With Chippenham bringing on fresh legs there was no let up for Pewsey and following some nice backs play another two tries were added, one converted, the score now standing at 69-0 with 10 minutes remaining. Pewsey were briefly reduced to 14 men with Front Row Jamie Padfield having to leave the field due to a shoulder injury, seeing an already injured replacement in Jamie Fox return to the field.

In the final 10 minutes Chippenham were able to add another 2 unconverted tries making the final score 79-0 and capping off an extremely tough day at the office for the lads.

Man of the Match was given to Will Bowerman for some truly outstanding defensive work and constantly chopping down the large Chippenham forwards who managed to break through the initial defensive line.

It’s always tough to be on the wrong end of a result like this but the lads showed character and stuck to the task until the final whistle. Next week (8th October) we are on the road again. This time at Royal Wootton Bassett who currently sit 5th in the table.
